April 14, 2010, Kingston, Ontario – At approximately 2:30 p.m. on April 13, 2010, three inmates assaulted another inmate in a cell block area of Kingston Penitentiary. Staff monitoring the area acted immediately to control the situation and secure the cell block. The weapon used has been recovered and the aggressors have been moved to segregation. The victim of the assault received puncture wounds to his arm and torso, and a broken wrist. He was assessed at the institution, sent for treatment at Kingston General Hospital, and has since returned to the institution. One of the aggressors received a minor puncture wound and was treated at the institution.
Police have been notified and charges are pending.
This incident was isolated to one cell block in the institution. The cell block where the attack took place remains locked down and is currently being searched for weapons. Visits are proceeding as scheduled.
Correctional Service Canada is committed to taking all measures necessary to ensure a safe environment in our facilities. The remainder of the institution remains quiet.
