INTEGRATED POLICE AND PAROLE INITIATIVE TO ENHANCE PUBLIC SAFETY

April 14, 2010, Kingston, Ontario - The City of Kingston is to benefit from the Integrated Police/Parole Initiative.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and the Kingston Police Service are partnering together to enhance public safety by engaging a Community Corrections Liaison Officer (CCLO), a dedicated police officer to work closely with parole officers through an Interchange Canada Agreement, funded by the Correctional Service of Canada.  The CCLO's main activities include monitoring the activities of higher-risk offenders; acting as a link with police and other relevant agencies in order to enhance information sharing; and engaging in activities related to reducing the number of unlawfully at large offenders.

"This partnership between the Correctional Service Canada and the Kingston Police Service is one of many examples of our Government’s strong commitment to public safety and to safer communities,” said the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety.

"We welcome this increased co-operation with CSC," said Kingston Chief of Police Stephen Tanner. "This formal partnership will enhance our ability to maintain public safety in our city."

"This initiative will expand the capacity of police and parole and will serve us well as a strategic foundation for future collaborations with police services to meet mutual public safety objectives," added CSC Regional Deputy Commissioner Ross Toller, on behalf of CSC Commissioner Don Head.

As part of this initiative, 17 other CCLOs have been hired across Canada.
