KINGSTON, ON – April 19, 2010 – At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, 2010, a disturbance broke out in the institution’s recreation yard, where approximately 70 inmates refused to return from recreation and several altercations took place between inmates. Following negotiations between staff and inmates, 36 inmates returned to their cells without incident.
During the initial disturbance, two inmates sustained injuries and were treated on site. An additional three inmates were sent to outside hospital, one of whom was treated for non-life threatening injuries and has since returned. Two inmates remain at outside hospital in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.
The Crisis Centre was opened and the Warden is on site. All staff have been accounted for and there are no staff injuries reported at this time.
As of 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 19, 2010, 27 inmates in the recreation yard are in the process of returning to their cells via Emergency Response Team Escort.
The Institution remains locked down and all visits are suspended until further notice.
Ensuring the safety and security of our institutions, staff and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the Correctional Service of Canada. The institution will return to normal routine once the Warden determines that it is safe to do so.
