INMATE ASSAULT AT JOYCEVILLE INSTITUTION

Kingston, ON, April 24, 2010 – At approximately 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, Correctional Officers at Joyceville Institution observed an inmate in the cell blocks who appeared to be suffering from injuries sustained in an attack.

The inmate was immediately escorted to outside hospital and remains there at this time. The extent and nature of the injuries are currently undetermined.

The Warden is on site and all staff have been accounted for. There are no staff injuries reported at this time.

The institution is now locked down and all visits are suspended until further notice. Investigations are ongoing and the Pen Squad has attended the site. There is no information to suggest that this incident is related to the disturbances on April 18, 2010.

The institution will return to normal routine once the Warden determines that it is safe to do so.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) works to ensure the continued safety and security of the public, staff and inmates.

CSC examines each incident of violence in order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents.
