FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE ASSAULT AT MILLHAVEN INSTITUTION

Kingston, Ontario, May 11, 2010 – At approximately 10:00 a.m. an inmate at Millhaven Institution was assaulted in the outside recreation area, incurring significant injuries to his head. Staff responded quickly and transported the inmate to the institutional healthcare centre. At approximately 10:30 a.m., the inmate was taken to outside hospital where he is currently in stable condition. Staff identified four aggressors who have since been secured in segregation.

Visits are unaffected by this incident. The institution is operating on a regular routine.

The OPP Penitentiary Squad has been contacted and will be conducting an investigation into this incident. Correctional Service Canada will also be conducting an investigation into this incident.

The safety and security of our institutions are the primary focus of our operations.
