DRUG SEIZURE – FENBROOK INSTITUTION

Gravenhurst, Ontario, Monday, May 17, 2010 – On Sunday, May 16, 2010, staff, acting on intelligence information, intercepted a visitor who was attempting to introduce drugs and tobacco into Fenbrook Institution. Correctional Service Canada (CSC) seized 19 pills, 7.3 grams of marijuana and a quantity of tobacco. The estimated value of the drugs and tobacco totals $8,155.

The Ontario Provincial Police have been contacted and charges have been laid against the visitor. The pills and substances were turned over to the police.

CSC has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These include such things as searches of offenders, searches of visitors, use of ion scanners, use of drug dogs and searches of buildings and cells.

As part of its Transformation Agenda,CSC is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC also works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.
