June 28, 2010, Kingston, Ontario, Joyceville Institution – As a result of information obtained by the Security Intelligence team, Joyceville Institution staff made two significant drug seizures on Saturday, June 26, 2010.
One visitor was intercepted upon entering Joyceville Institution, and found to be in possession of 65 grams of marijuana with an estimated institutional value of $6500. The visitor was among 161 people who visited the institution to attend the scheduled family gathering. The OPP Penitentiary Squad immediately attended the institution and charged the visitor with “Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking”.
The Security Intelligence team also discovered that a Joyceville Institution inmate was in possession of a quantity of drugs. Correctional staff then confiscated a package containing 27 grams of marijuana and 26.5 grams of heroin. The approximate institutional value is $29, 200. The Penitentiary Squad was notified and is following up.
Thanks to the diligence of staff, drugs of an estimated institutional value of $35,700 were intercepted before entering the medium security institution. The Correctional Service of Canada has a zero tolerance policy on drugs in our facilities. Through the professionalism of our staff and the cooperation of police officials, a significant amount of drugs have been prevented from entering the facility.
