FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bath, ON, June 30th 2010 - On Tuesday June 29th at approximately 7:30pm staff observed inmates in the Maximum Security Unit displaying suspicious behaviours. Staff searched an inmate’s cell and recovered a total of 177 grams of marijuana, of an institutional value of approximately $17 700. Subsequently, additional inmates were being searched when an inmate assaulted a staff member. The staff member was injured and was taken to Kingston General Hospital where he was treated and released.
The OPP Pen Squad has been contacted and will be investigating both incidents.
As a result Millhaven Institution is locked down and all visits have been cancelled for today. It is expected that Millhaven Assessment Unit will return to normal operations tomorrow and that the Secure Unit will be locked down to facilitate an exceptional search. Full operations will return to normal once the Warden determines it is safe to do so.
Ensuring the safety and security of our institutions, staff and public remains the highest priority for the Correctional Service of Canada.
As part of its Transformation Agenda, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC also works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.
