Gravenhurst, Ontario, July 7th 2010 – On Tuesday, July 6, 2010 an inmate at Fenbrook Institution was assaulted by another inmate. The victim had arrived at Fenbrook Institution with the Regional transfer escort team at 4:30 pm on July 6, 2010. He was assaulted exiting his accommodation unit at 5:55 pm. Officers immediately provided first aid to the victim and he was then taken by ambulance to outside hospital. He was treated for his injuries and has returned to the institution where he has been placed in Segregation.
Police have been contacted. An aggressor has not yet been identified.
Searching of the institution has begun, and normal institutional operations and visits are suspended.
A lockdown has been put in place in order to facilitate an internal investigation into the event while ensuring the continued safety and security of the public, staff and inmates. CSC examines each incident of violence in order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents.
The facility will reopen once institutional management determines that it is safe to do so.
