FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT ON INMATE – COLLINS BAY INSTITUTION

Kingston, Ontario - July 20, 2010: At approximately 8:00 p.m., July 19, 2010 Correctional Officers reported an inmate with visible signs of injury. The victim appeared to have lacerations to his head and face. Staff took immediate action accounting for all inmates and providing immediate first aid to the individual involved. The inmate was taken to outside hospital, treated, and has returned to Collins Bay Institution.

The institution has locked down Unit 4 to facilitate an exceptional search as authorized by the A/Warden. An investigation will be conducted into this incident. The remainder of the Institution is operational and on regular routine. Visitors are advised to call the institution in advance of attending.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
