FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE ASSAULT AND LOCKDOWN AT JOYCEVILLE INSTITUTION

Kingston, Ontario, August 20, 2010 - At approximately 3:45 p.m. on August 19, 2010 Correctional Officers observed an inmate on a range with visible signs of injury. The victim appeared to have suffered puncture wounds caused by an assault. Staff took immediate action, providing first aid to the individual involved and accounting for all inmates. The inmate was taken by ambulance to outside hospital where he remains in stable condition.

The institution is locked down to facilitate an exceptional search of one range as authorized by the A/Warden. An investigation will be conducted by the OPP Pen Squad. Correctional Service Canada will also be conducting an investigation into this incident.

Visits are proceeding as scheduled, with the exception of one range. The public is reminded to call ahead to schedule visits.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
