FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 20, 2010, Kingston, Ontario – Joyceville Institution is currently locked down to facilitate an exceptional search for drugs, weapons and other contraband items.
The Warden has determined that the lockdown and exceptional search of the institution is necessary to ensure the continued safety and security of staff, offenders and the public. This decision follows a significant drug and contraband seizure on Saturday, September 18, 2010. Acting on security intelligence information, staff intercepted drug and contraband items during a family gathering, including approximately 300 grams of marijuana with an estimated institutional value of $30,000, tobacco and drug paraphernalia.
The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad attended the institution and charged one visitor with Possession of drugs and five visitors with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. Further charges are pending.
To date, searching of the institution has resulted in the additional seizure of 3 grams of heroin, with an estimated institutional value of $3000 and 24 grams of marijuana with an estimated institutional value of $2400, and other contraband and unauthorized items, including one homemade weapon.
Currently, visits are cancelled and visitors are asked to call before travelling to the institution.
As part of its Transformation Agenda, CSC is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC also works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.
The institution will return to normal operations once the Warden determines it is safe to do so.
