KINGSTON, ON, September 29, 2010 The lockdown and exceptional search initiated by the Warden on Monday, September 20, 2010 has concluded. Joyceville Institution is currently on a modified routine and will return to normal operations as of 8:00 a.m. September 30, 2010.
During this search, staff seized a total of eighteen (18) weapons, 10.5 grams of heroin and 3.5 grams of marijuana with an estimated institutional value of $10,850, 60 grams of tobacco with an estimated institutional value of $1,100, ten (10) tattoo needles and a variety of tattoo paraphernalia. No injuries to staff or inmates were sustained as a result of this action.
The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad is investigating the seizure of heroin and marijuana. Charges are pending against one inmate.
The institution remains quiet and secure. The visiting schedule has been reinstated effective today.
The safety and security of the institution is our primary objective. This exceptional search was a proactive measure to maintain a safe environment within the institution.
