Inmate Assault at Millhaven Institution

Bath, ON, October 13, 2010 – On Tuesday October 12, 2010 at approximately 6:05 p.m., an inmate was assaulted in the recreation area at Millhaven Institution. Staff quickly intervened in an attempt to gain control. When the assailants refused to stop the assault, staff used a firearm and struck one of the assailants. The assault ceased and the offender being assaulted attempted to leave the recreation yard, but was assaulted again by other inmates. Again, staff quickly intervened and the assault ceased at approximately 7:21 p.m.

All inmates were secured in their cells by approximately 11:45 p.m.

Two inmates were transferred to outside hospital via ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. Both offenders have now been released from hospital and are in stable condition. They have been returned to the institution and placed in segregation.

The OPP Pen Squad was called to the site and is investigating. The Correctional Service Canada (CSC) is also conducting an investigation.

As a result of this incident, visits have been cancelled for the maximum security offender unit.

CSC monitors and examines each incident of violence in order to improve its measures to prevent and reduce future incidents.

Ensuring the safety and security of our institutions, staff and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the Correctional Service of Canada.
