DRUG AND TOBACCO SEIZURE AT PITTSBURGH INSTITUTION

Kingston, On – November 2nd, 2010 – On Monday, November 1st, 2010 acting on information from the Security Intelligence department of Pittsburgh Institution, staff members found two offenders in an out-of-bounds area, in possession of 10 bails of tobacco and 6 packs of rolling papers for an institutional value of approximately $2,000. They were also in possession of 3.25 ounces of marijuana with an institutional value of approximately $7,250.

The Ontario Provincial Police Penitentiary Squad was called to investigate and criminal charges are pending.

Also, on Saturday, October 30th, 2010 acting on intelligence information, staff members found an offender in possession of 30 bails of tobacco and 25 packs of rolling papers. The quantity of tobacco found has an estimated institutional value of approximately $6,000.

Tobacco has been an unauthorized item within all federal correctional facilities since June 2008.

As part of its Transformation Agenda, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.
