FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Gravenhurst Ontario, November 9, 2010 - On Sunday November 7, 2010, during routine searches of vehicles entering the institutional property, a canine from the Detector Dog Program indicated on a vehicle for the presence of drugs. Correctional officers searched the vehicle and found a small amount of marijuana. The Ontario Provincial Police were called to the scene and charged one of the vehicle occupants with possession of a controlled substance.
While the OPP were processing this individual, the detector dog indicated on another vehicle that had also entered the institutional property. Correctional officers searched this vehicle and found small amounts of marijuana and hashish. The operator of that vehicle was turned over to the OPP who were on site and that individual was also charged with possession of a controlled substance.
In both cases, the individuals involved were entering the institutional property to visit offenders at Beaver Creek Institution.
As part of its Transformation Agenda, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC also works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.
