Government of Canada invests in safer communities in Kitchener area

KITCHENER, November 9, 2010 – Today, Stephen Woodworth, Member of Parliament for Kitchener Centre announced that the federal government will provide $67,000 in funding for the Community Justice Initiatives’ (CJI) Stride Program. CJI engages and involves community volunteers to assists women serving a federal prison sentence to make the challenging transition from life in prison to life as part of a community.

“This announcement demonstrates the Correctional Service of Canada’s ongoing work to better ensure the safety and security of Canadian families and communities,” said MP Woodworth. “This program offers services for women offenders to address the problems that led to their imprisonment, and aims to ensure that they can re-enter their communities, and not re-engage in criminal activity.”

CSC operates six regional facilities for federal women offenders: Nova Institution (Truro, NS); Joliette Institution (Joliette, QC); Grand Valley Institution (Kitchener, ON); Fraser Valley Institution (Abbotsford, BC); Edmonton Institution for Women (Edmonton, AB); and Okimaw Ohci Healing Lodge, located near Maple Creek, SK.
