FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kingston, Ontario, December 6, 2010 – Joyceville Institution staff intercepted a number of visitors entering the Institution with drugs and contraband on Saturday, December 5. The visitors were participating in a special Holiday Season event at the Institution.
Institutional staff prevented 138.5 grams of marijuana and 172.5 grams of tobacco from entering the medium-security institution. The estimated institutional value of the seizure amounted to $18,850.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Penitentiary Squad immediately investigated and issued criminal charges. An investigation by the Institution, in conjunction with the Pen squad, is ongoing.
Preventing drugs from entering our institutions is an ongoing challenge, however, it is the diligent work of staff and in many cases the police that help us tackle this challenge.
CSC has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These include non-intrusive searches of visitors, ion scanners, drug dogs and searches of buildings, cells and offenders.
