Campbellford, Ont. - December 8, 2010 On Saturday December 4, 2010, Warkworth Institution staff, in conjunction with Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), intercepted a number of visitors attempting to introduce drugs and tobacco into the institution. Visitors were attending the Holiday Season Family Reintegration Day.
In accordance with established routine procedure for such events, correctional staff searched vehicles and persons with the assistance of drug detector dogs. The total drugs seized included approximately 13.2 grams of cocaine and 80 grams of marijuana with an estimated Institutional value of $10,600. In addition, 27.1 grams of tobacco with an estimated institutional value of $250 was seized. The OPP were on site and placed criminal charges in these cases. Correctional Service Canada has a zero-tolerance policy on illegal drugs in institutions and works closely with local police agencies and communities to stop drugs from entering its institutions.- 30 -
