Kingston, Ontario, January 31, 2011 – On January 30th, 2011 at approximately 1:00 pm, there was an incident involving eight to 10 inmates in the recreation building at Collins Bay Institution. Correctional staff quickly intervened to gain control of the situation. The incident resulted in minor injuries to several inmates. Weapons were found during the initial search of the recreation area.
The internal investigation into this matter is ongoing. CSC examines each incident of violence in order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents.
In the interest of the safety and security of the Institution, the Acting Deputy Warden placed Collins Bay Institution on lockdown and ordered an exceptional search of the institution.
Visits have been suspended until further notice.
Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
