Bath, ON, March 21, 2011 – On Sunday, March 20, 2011, inmates from the maximum security unit at Millhaven Institution were participating in their regular recreation activities when, at approximately 1835 hours, a violent incident occurred in the gymnasium. In order to gain control of the situation, chemical agents were deployed and shots fired. Information continues to be gathered, however; one inmate has been pronounced dead; two others sustained injuries and have been taken to outside hospital.
Inmate Jordan Trudeau (DOB: November 4, 1981) was pronounced dead at approximately 1915 hours. Next of kin have been notified.
All inmates are currently being returned to their respective cells.
No staff injuries have been reported at this time.
As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner are called in to investigate. As well, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will be investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.
The institution is locked down at this time and all visits are cancelled. Visitors are reminded to contact the institution before visiting due to the current restrictions.
