FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE ASSAULT AND EXCEPTIONAL SEARCH – JOYCEVILLE INSTITUTION

Kingston, Ontario, March 29, 2011 – On March 28, 2011 at approximately 8:15 p.m., staff responded to an inmate assault in the Recreation area of the Institution. One inmate sustained minor injuries in the assault. He was sent to Kingston General Hospital for treatment and later returned to the Institution. The institution has been locked down to facilitate a search of the facility. It will reopen once institutional management determines that it is safe to do so.

Visits are suspended until further notice.

CSC examines each incident of violence in order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents.

The safety and security of our institutions and the public is our primary objective. The Institution will return to normal operations once the Warden determines it is safe to do so.
