Kingston, ON, April 24, 2011 – On Sunday, April 24, 2011 at approximately 8:50 a.m., Correctional Officers, while patrolling the recreation area, observed an altercation taking place involving several inmates. Orders were immediately given to stop; chemical agents were deployed and the area was secured. Offenders are now being returned to their cells.
Eight offenders were transferred to outside hospital. One offender sustained serious injuries and is currently in intensive care. The other offenders are being treated for their injuries.
The institution is currently locked down. All visits are cancelled until further notice. Visitors are reminded to contact the institution before visiting due to the current restrictions.
CSC reviews the circumstances surrounding all incidents of this nature. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Penitentiary Squad will also be investigating this incident.
Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
