FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE DEATH, KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

May 9, 2011, Kingston, Ontario – At approximately 4:35 p.m. on Sunday, May 8, 2011, Correctional Officers performing a routine patrol in a cell block observed an inmate in his cell in an unresponsive state. The officers immediately responded, initiated CPR and removed the inmate to the institutional health care centre. An ambulance was called and paramedics took over treatment of the inmate upon their arrival at the institution. All efforts to revive the inmate were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at 5:18 p.m.

Steven Reaume was serving a life sentence for second degree murder and robbery which commenced August 13, 2009. Next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases where an inmate dies in custody, the police and coroner have been notified and are currently investigating. Correctional Service of Canada will also review the circumstances surrounding this incident.
