FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT ON STAFF - COLLINS BAY INSTITUTION

Kingston Ontario, July 19, 2011 – At approximately 8:20 a.m., a correctional officer was physically assaulted by an inmate while conducting a routine patrol of a living unit. Correctional Officers monitoring the area immediately responded, securing the inmate. On site medical staff provided initial aid to the officer who was later transferred in stable condition to a local hospital for further assessment.

The Ontario Provincial Police Penitentiary squad and Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) are investigating the incident. Charges are pending.

The institution is operating under a modified routine.

Visitors are asked to contact the facility to confirm status of the visiting program before attending the site.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
