FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT ON STAFF – KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

Kingston, Ontario – October 5, 2011:  At approximately 10:45 am on October 4, 2011 a correctional officer was physically assaulted by an inmate while conducting a routine patrol of a living unit. Correctional officers monitoring the area responded immediately, securing the inmate. While responding to the assault another officer received minor injuries. On site medical staff provided initial aid to the injured officers and offender.

The inmate was later transported to outside hospital for assessment.  He was released and remains under the care and custody of the Correctional Service of Canada.

The institution is operating under a modified routine.

The Ontario Provincial Police penitentiary Squad and the Correctional Service of Canada are investigating the incident.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
