FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE ASSAULT AT KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

Kingston, Ontario, November 2, 2011 – At approximately 1400 hrs on October 31, 2011, an inmate at Kingston Penitentiary was assaulted, incurring significant injuries to his jaw. Staff responded and transported the inmate to the institution’s healthcare facility for assessment. He was subsequently transferred to outside hospital for treatment, where he currently remains. Three aggressors have been identified and segregated.

Visits are unaffected by this incident and the institution is operating on normal routine.

CSC and Kingston Penitentiary will be conducting a joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident and are working with the OPP Penitentiary Squad.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
