FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kingston, Ontario, November 15, 2011 – At approximately 6:00 p.m., on Monday November 14, 2011, at Collins Bay Institution (a medium security federal penitentiary) an inmate was found to have been assaulted. The injured inmate was immediately assessed by staff and escorted for treatment at outside hospital.
The warden authorized a lockdown and exceptional search of the institution, to ensure the ongoing safety and security of the institution, its staff and the inmates. The institution will return to normal routine when it is determined safe to do so.
The Ontario Provincial Police Penitentiary Squad and Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) are investigating the incident.
Visits will be suspended until the search has been completed.
In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will continue to work in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.
