FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE ASSAULT AT MILLHAVEN INSTITUTION

Kingston, Ontario, December 27, 2011  - At approximately 10:17 p.m., on Sunday December 25, 2011, at Millhaven Institution, a maximum security federal penitentiary, an inmate was found to have been assaulted. The injured inmate was immediately assessed by staff and escorted for treatment at outside hospital.

The Ontario Provincial Police Penitentiary Squad and Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) are investigating the incident.

Regularly scheduled visits to the institution may be affected. Those who have previously scheduled visits are asked to contact the institution directly.

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will continue to work in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.
