FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MISSION, B.C., January 5, 2004 - Inmates at Mission Institution are locked in their cells.

Management and staff are assessing the risk in the institution after a series of incidents involving alcohol, drugs, suspected inmate assaults, increase in protective custody requests, and weapons seizures. There have been no injuries to staff.

Regularly scheduled visits to the institution are cancelled until further notice.

Mission Institution is a medium security federal facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located just north of Mission and currently houses 282 male offenders.
