FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION

AGASSIZ, B.C., February 26, 2004 - A Mountain Institution inmate was found dead of an apparent suicide yesterday.

Staff learned that an inmate was missing from the evening routine count. Correctional staff were informed to search the institution's Aboriginal sweat lodge area where the body was found.

Steve Wilson, 31, was pronounced dead by the Provincial Coroner at 12:59 am.

He was serving a life sentence, commencing in 1999 for second-degree murder.

Both the institutional Security Intelligence Office and the RCMP are investigating. At this time foul play is not suspected.

Next of kin have been notified.

Mountain Institution is a federal medium-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 440 inmates.
