FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT KENT INSTITUTION

AGASSIZ, BC, April 6, 2004 - A general population inmate was assaulted with a weapon in the gymnasium at Kent Institution yesterday (April 5) at approximately 8:50 p.m.

The inmate, who suffered stab wounds, was transferred to outside hospital for treatment. He remains in outside hospital in stable condition.

The unit in which the inmate resided in was locked down to facilitate an ongoing investigation and search of the common areas.

Four inmates have been segregated as a result of their possible involvement in the incident.

The RCMP was called and is investigating the incident. The Correctional Service of Canada will also be conducting an internal investigation.

Kent Institution is a federal maximum security institution located 120 km east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 252 inmates.
