AGASSIZ, B.C., May 18, 2004 - Kent Institution is locked down today following an assault on an inmate in the gymnasium last evening.
At approximately 10 p.m., an inmate approached staff and indicated that he had been assaulted. The inmate was taken to health care where he was treated. He was transported to outside hospital for further assessment and returned to the institution later that evening.
The inmate received numerous stab wounds, none of which were considered to be life threatening.
The RCMP and the institution's Security Intelligence Office are investigating the incident.
A search for other weapons is being conducted in the yard and gymnasium. The Institution remains locked down to facilitate the investigation.
No staff or other inmates were injured during this incident.
Kent Institution is a federal maximum-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 258 inmates.
