FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT KENT INSTITUTION

AGASSIZ, B.C., August 20, 2004 - Kent Institution staff were approached by an inmate suffering from stab wounds yesterday (August 19) at approximately 5:30 p.m..

Staff immediately locked down the cell block and took the inmate to health care to be assessed.

The inmate was taken to outside hospital for treatment and remains there for observation. His injuries are not life-threatening.

The cell block remains locked down while a search is conducted for the weapon. Approximately 29 inmates are affected by the lockdown. The rest of the institution is operating normally. No suspect(s) has been identified and police were advised of the situation.

Kent Institution is a federal maximum security facility located 120 km east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 250 inmates.
