FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT KENT INSTITUTION

AGASSIZ, B.C., October 15, 2004 - A general population inmate was assaulted in his living unit at Kent Institution yesterday.

The inmate was transferred to outside hospital for treatment and was returned to custody later that evening.

The unit in which the inmate resided has been locked down to facilitate an ongoing investigation and search.

There are no suspects in the assault at this time.

The RCMP was called and is investigating the incident. The Correctional Service of Canada will also be conducting an internal investigation.

Kent Institution is a federal maximum security institution located 120 km east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 257 inmates.
