LOCKDOWN AT MATSQUI INSTITUTION - UPDATE

ABBOTSFORD, B.C., December 9, 2004 - The lock down of inmates at Matsqui Institution ended at 9 p.m. on December 8. The facility returned to normal operation this morning.

Inmates had been confined to their cells since 7:30 p.m. on December 5 after quantities of brew, drugs and weapons were found over the previous few days. An exceptional search was conducted resulting in contraband seizures including drug paraphernalia, some homemade weapons, a small amount of marijuana and pills, and other unauthorized items.

Matsqui Institution is a medium security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Abbotsford and has a current population of 300 male offenders.
