AGASSIZ, BC, March 9, 2005- At approximately 5:00 p.m. on March 8th, one inmate stabbed another inmate with an edged weapon at Mountain Institution. At approximately the same time, staff responded to an unrelated incident in which one inmate was physically assaulting another inmate. All population inmates were directed to return to their cells as the Institution was placed on lockdown. The victim of the stabbing was treated in outside hospital and returned to the Institution. The four inmates involved in the two separate incidents were removed from the population. As well, an additional inmate was removed from the population following the lockdown of the Institution. No staff injuries have occurred as a result of these incidents.
The Institution remains locked down to facilitate a search of the Living Units. All regularly scheduled visits have been suspended for the duration of the lockdown.
Mountain Institution is a medium security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Agassiz and currently houses 476 federally sentenced, male inmates.
