DEATH AT KENT INSTITUTION

AGASSIZ, BC, April 13, 2005 - At approximately 10:15 last evening, an inmate was stabbed to death in his living unit at Kent Institution. A second inmate also received numerous stab wounds and was transported to outside hospital for further treatment. He returned to the institution early this morning.

The RCMP and the institution's Security Intelligence Office are investigating the incident.

The deceased victim was a 34-year-old offender serving a four-year sentence for Armed Robbery.

A suspect in the two stabbings has been identified. The institution is currently locked down to facilitate a search. The weapon used in the assault has not been recovered.

No staff were injured during this incident.

Kent Institution is a federal maximum-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 253 inmates.
