FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT KENT INSTITUTION

AGASSIZ, BC, July 18, 2005 - Maximum-security Kent Institution is locked down to facilitate a search following an assault on an inmate on July 15.

It has not been determined if a weapon was used in the assault which occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. The victim was assaulted in his living unit at Kent Institution. He was transported to outside hospital where he remains.

The RCMP and the institution's security intelligence office are investigating the incident.

The victim is a 24-year-old offender serving a six-year sentence for aggravated assault.

No suspect has been identified.

No staff were injured during this incident.

Kent Institution is a federal maximum-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 253 inmates.
