FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ABBOTSFORD, BC, July 20, 2005 - Inmates at Matsqui Institution were locked down yesterday to facilitate a search following an assault on an inmate.

It has not been determined the type of weapon that was used in the assault. The victim was assaulted in his cell. His injuries were superficial and were treated by a nurse at the Institution.

The victim is a 31-year-old offender serving a 30-month sentence for assault.

Abbotsford police and the Institution's security intelligence office are investigating the incident.

No staff were injured during the incident.

Regularly scheduled visits to the Institution have been suspended.

Matsqui Institution is a medium security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Abbotsford and has a current population of 318 male offenders.
