ABBOTSFORD, BC, July 23, 2005 - The lockdown of inmates at Matsqui Institution ended at 6:30 a.m. Saturday July 23. Regularly scheduled visits and other planned activities will occur.
Inmates had been confined to their cells since 10:30 p.m. July 20 to facilitate searching of the institution. The decision to lockdown the institution was taken after an inmate was assaulted.
The search resulted in the confiscation of home-made brews, home-made weapons, drug paraphernalia and other unauthorized items.
Matsqui Institution is a medium security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Abbotsford and has a current population of 321 male offenders.
