FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MISSION, BC, August 12, 2005 - In the spirit of the special Olympiads, Mission Institution inmates will hold a Challenge Sports Day on August 18.
More than 50 developmentally-challenged athletes from various communities throughout the Fraser Valley have confirmed their attendance. This event, which has been held over the past 20 years, will feature activities such as tug-o-war, bean bag toss and a dunk tank.
The Challenge Sports Day gives offenders the opportunity to demonstrate their reintegration potential and take part in initiatives that benefit the community.
"The special Olympiads are an opportunity for offenders to contribute positively to society and to see the impact of their goodwill firsthand; this is important learning in terms of social responsibility," says Lucie McClung, Commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada. "For participants and those who witness their joy, it can be one of the most exhilarating times in their lives."
Various local dignitaries will be in attendance including Maple Ridge - Mission MLA Randy Hawes and Don Demers, Regional Deputy Commissioner, Correctional Service of Canada.
The opening ceremonies are set to commence at 9:30 a.m. with events scheduled throughout the day.
Media planning to attend this event should contact Terry Hackett at (604) 820-5887 for arrangements.
