FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MISSION, BC, September 24, 2005 - Inmates at Mission Institution are locked in their cells while a search is being conducted.
The lockdown was initiated during the evening of September 23, 2005. Staff discovered an assault on an inmate, in which the inmate suffered minor injuries. There was also a fight between two different inmates, which staff broke up before any apparent injuries.
To provide an opportunity for management and staff to assess the risk in the institution and for the safety and security of staff and inmates, the inmates remain locked in their cells.
A search is being conducted. The institution will remain locked down until all areas of the institution have been searched. Regularly scheduled visits to the institution are cancelled until return to normal routine.
There are no staff injuries, and there are no other known inmate injuries at this time.
Mission Institution is a medium security federal facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located just north of Mission and currently houses 268 male offenders.
