LOCKDOWN CONCLUDED AT MISSION INSTITUTION - UPDATE

MISSION, BC, September 26, 2005 - After a weekend lockdown, Mission Institution has resumed normal operations.

During the evening of September 23, staff discovered one inmate assaulted, and two other inmates were involved in a separate physical altercation. To provide an opportunity for management and staff to assess the risk in the institution and for the safety and security of staff and inmates, inmates were locked in their cells.

A search was conducted, but nothing significant was found.

One inmate suffered minor injuries Friday night, but there are no other known inmate injuries. There were no staff injuries. Investigation resulted in inmates segregated or transferred to other correctional facilities.

The institution has returned to normal routine this morning.

Mission Institution is a medium security federal facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located just north of Mission and currently houses 265 male offenders.
