FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ABBOTSFORD, BC, April 3, 2006 - Matsqui Institution is locked down to allow for an exceptional search of the Abbotsford facility.

All general population inmates are locked in their cells.

The lock down began at 8 p.m. yesterday (April 2) following a serious assault on an inmate.

Staff are searching specific areas of the institution for contraband associated with this incident, drugs and drug paraphernalia and other items which could jeopardize the security of the institution.

Regularly scheduled visits to the institution have been suspended for the duration of the lockdown.

Matsqui Institution is a medium-security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Abbotsford and has a capacity of 333 male offenders.
