FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ABBOTSFORD, BC, April 12, 2006 - A lock down was initiated at 10:20 a.m. today at Matsqui Institution after an inmate physically assaulted a correctional officer. The officer was examined by Matsqui institutional health care staff and released.

Two other correctional officers also were examined by health care staff after receiving minor injuries during the response to the incident. The inmate has been transferred to a maximum security institution. Police have been notified.

Regularly scheduled visits to the institution have been suspended for the duration of the lock down.

Matsqui Institution is a medium-security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Abbotsford and has a capacity of 334 male offenders.
