AGASSIZ, BC, April 26, 2006 - A general population inmate was assaulted in a common area of his cell block at Kent Institution the evening of April 25.
The inmate was transferred to outside hospital for treatment and was returned to custody later that evening. The injuries he received are considered serious.
The block in which the assault occurred was locked down to facilitate the continuing institutional investigation and search. Five inmates were segregated for their suspected involvement in the assault.
The RCMP attended the institution and is investigating the incident. The Correctional Service of Canada will also be completing an internal investigation.
Kent Institution is a federal maximum security institution located 140 km east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 230 inmates.
