FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MISSION, BC, April 27, 2006 - A lockdown was initiated at 2:20 pm today at Mission Institution.
An inmate was discovered in his cell this afternoon with multiple injuries consistent with an assault. The institution is conducting a cell-to-cell search for any possible weapons or evidence of participation in an assault. Although it appears the injured inmate was assaulted with a blunt object, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this time.
For the safety and security of staff and inmates, the inmates will remain locked down until all areas have been searched and a risk assessment has been conducted. Regularly scheduled visits and deliveries to the institution are cancelled until return to normal routine.
There are no staff or other inmate injuries known at this time.
Mission Institution is a medium security federal facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located just north of Mission and currently houses 267 male offenders.
