AGASSIZ, BC, May 8, 2006 - Two protective custody inmates were assaulted within the same cell block at Kent Institution the afternoon of May 7. The two assaults occurred about 20 minutes apart.
Both inmates were transferred separately to outside hospital for treatment and have been returned to custody. The injury suffered by one victim is considered serious.
The block in which the assaults occurred is locked down to facilitate an investigation and search. One inmate was segregated as a result of his involvement in one of the assaults.
The RCMP attended the institution and is investigating the incident. The Correctional Service of Canada is also conducting an internal investigation.
Kent Institution is a federal maximum security institution located 140 km east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 230 inmates.
