FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MISSION, BC, October 12, 2006 - Mission Institution has returned to normal routine after a lock down was initiated on Tuesday morning (October 10).
The institution initiated the lock down because of concerns with recent finds of home-made knives and illicit alcohol. Institutional management decided to conduct a complete search, including metal detectors and the service of drug-detection dogs, to ensure the safety and security of staff and inmates.
Inmates remained in their cells until Wednesday evening, and after a risk assessment, the institution has returned to regular activities.
During the search, contraband and unauthorized items such as home-made knives, tattoo and brew-making equipment, and gambling sheets were seized.
Mission Institution is a medium-security federal facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located just north of Mission and currently houses 263 male offenders.
